How to draft a ten-question tech skills quiz

A good skills quiz starts with a purpose and a limited topic, not a pile of trivia. This guide walks through drafting ten questions that give a useful, fair picture of someone's technology knowledge.

Step one: define the decision — TecsIQTecsIQ · Fitness

01

Step one: define the decision

Decide what the result will be used for before writing any question. A quiz for onboarding new office staff differs from one screening junior analysts. Name the audience, the skill area and the action each score band leads to, such as recommending a tutorial or assigning a mentor. Worked example: a ten-question quiz on everyday cloud and security literacy for new hires, where low scores trigger a short training session and high scores skip it. Write that sentence at the top of your draft and reject any question that does not support it.

02

Step two: balance the ten questions

Split the ten questions across three or four subtopics so one weak area does not dominate. In the cloud and security example, use three on account safety, three on file storage and sharing, two on recognizing suspicious messages and two on basic troubleshooting. Mix difficulty: four easy, four moderate, two demanding. Prefer scenario questions, like what to do when a shared link exposes a folder, over memorized definitions. Give each question four answer options, one clearly best, and write distractors from real mistakes people make so wrong answers teach something.

03

Step three: test, score and explain

Ask two or three colleagues to take the draft and note unclear wording, ambiguous answers or questions that feel unfair. Remove anything that depends on a specific brand of tool unless the role requires it. Set score bands in advance, for instance zero to four for foundational training, five to seven for targeted review and eight to ten for advanced material. Pair every answer with a one-sentence explanation. Finally, review results by question: if nearly everyone misses one, the wording is likely at fault, so revise it before using the quiz widely.
